Pregnancy needs special care and attention to ensure good health of a woman. There are some supplements that need to be taken by the pregnant women. Pregnant women who take iron supplements have a lower risk of giving birth to an underweight baby. Intake of iron supplements can lower the risk of developing anemia. It can increase the mother’s hemoglobin level. Research studies have revealed that anemia can raise the risk of giving birth to a low-weight baby. Millions of women are affected by this condition worldwide.
Folic acid belongs to the B group of vitamins. The natural form is called folate. The baby develops rapidly during pregnancy and needs essential nutrients for kids. The deficiency of folate can lead to complications in the mother and defects in the baby. It is very important during the early pregnancy phase. At this stage, the foetus develops spine and nerve cells. Deficiency can lead to malformation of the spine in the developing baby. Intake of folate supplements can minimize the incidence of such defects. Folic acid is also found naturally in fresh vegetables, orange juice, legumes, nuts and yeast.
Iodine is essential for the normal growth and mental development of a baby. It plays an important role in regulating the thyroid gland. Calcium is an essential nutrient for a developing foetus. It is needed for the development of healthy bones, teeth, muscles and heart of a growing baby. Omega- 3 fatty acids

There are three main kinds, namely Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The best way is to get them through food or a supplement. In case of pregnancy, omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA is very important for the baby’s health. It helps the growing baby’s brain and eye development. Most doctors recommend the daily intake of a supplement that contains at least 200 milligrams of DHA.
Vitamin A is also required during pregnancy. The best way to get sufficient vitamin A is through a balanced diet, including milk and eggs. However, too much amount is to be avoided. It can harm both the mother and the baby.
Pregnant women should only take supplements on a physician’s recommendation. Supplements do not replace a balanced diet, but ensure that a woman is receiving enough nutrients. These nutrients prevent any malformation of the baby and take care of a new born.
